This Was Your Life, Jack Chick!

Personal feelings and biases aside, I can't help but feel bad about Jack Chick dying last week. He was 92 years old and was an instrumental figure (Pat Robertson and his 700 Club aside) for much of the religious right gaining traction within the United States. He became a Christian shortly after he got married and used his talents as a cartoonist to try and win as many souls as he could to Jesus Christ with little gospel tracts that can be passed out to anyone or left anonymously at the strangest of places.

I grew up reading those weird tracts due to my grandparents being religious and me reading every comic book I could find and as I got older I saw them as underground cartoon art. These tracts are misguided and hateful (several countries, including Canada, have even banned them for being hate literature!), but they're weirdly fascinating to read what kind of insanity that floated around Jack Chick's narrow mind. Even to the day of his death, Jack Chick never stopped drawing comics about Hell and Jesuit conspiracies. The man did a lot more harm than he did good, in spite of his calling of spreading the word of Christ. Still, I'm going to miss looking forward to the bi-monthly dose of insanity that would pop up on his website.

Please pass this online tract around as if it were the real thing. It's not gonna win your soul, but I hope I'll win at least a laugh or two.

Salaryman: The 9-to-5 Super Hero

Last year, I entered the Shonen Jump Manga Competition.

I didn't win.

The winning entries were pretty good, so I wasn't too upset. But it's still a defeat nevertheless.

Today is Free Comic Book Day. In the spirit of Free Comic Book Day, I'm posting my entry for the Jump competition right here on this page for free. It was a hellish three weeks drawing it all and I didn't win any prizes but it was a piece I'm still proud of.  I hope you all will like it.

Can't Buy Me Love?

For the first time in my life, I drew a comic about Valentine's Day. I've gotten less bitter about the holiday although I still find it pointless. If you love someone, why not do nice things for them regularly instead of just one day a year? Besides, the real holiday is on the 15th, the day all the discount Valentine's Day chocolate is on sale.

Take care of yourselves and always practice safe sex!

Showcase: "La Sociedad Loca"

I'm here to showcase a comic titled "La Sociedad Loca" (Insane Society), a Spanish-language webcomic hosted on the blog Missignos.

The comic itself is a random gag strip with a few recurring characters like "Don Pikachu" and overall subject matter consists of video games, sex, drugs, Guatemalan street life, et. al. Although the comic and blog is mostly written in Spanish, there are some strips written and drawn in English since the authors, Sergio Lucero & Angel de Leon, are multi-lingual. Plus, it doesn't hurt to learn a foreign language, jotos.

As for myself, I plan to play some more "DoA: Dimensions".

I mean, work.

Ever wanted to draw comics, but didn't know how?

This self-help comic contains eight pages of knowledge and whimsy, just like the typical Scott McCloud book.

...And yes, I totally stole his format. And I'm sorry for that. Still, he is a great man and I recommend his books to anyone who wishes to learn more about comics.
